More Information on Mississippi

Saint Stanislaus College traces its origins to January 5, 1853, when Brothers Basile Venable, Leo Maligne, and Joseph Deimer arrived in Bay Saint Louis in response to a request from Father Stanislaus Buteux, founding pastor of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, for Brothers to teach in his parish school for boys.

In the Fall of 1854, Father Stanislaus travelled to France to inquire of Brother Polycarp, then superior general of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, if more Brothers could be sent to Bay Saint Louis in order to start a boarding school. On January 11, 1855, Father Stanislaus returned to America accompanied by Brothers Eusebe Gulonnier, Ephrem Flechet, George Leydier, and Avit.

Father Stanislaus Buteux and Brother Polycarp Gondre worked together for the establishment of Saint Stanislaus College in Bay Saint Louis, dedicated to Saint Stanislaus Kostka, the patron of youth

In 1855, the Brothers bought property for $4000, on which a school building was constructed at a cost of $3800. The school was named Saint Stanislaus College in recognition of Father Stanislaus and placed under the patronage of Saint Stanislaus Kostka, the patron saint of youth. Brother Athaniasius became the first president of Saint Stanislaus College.

Over the past 150 years, many buildings have served the physical, spiritual, and academic needs of Saint Stanislaus College. Frequent hurricanes ensure that the school is never held back by outdated architecture.
For 150 years, Saint Stanislaus College has enjoyed prosperity and endured many hardships, including the Civil War, yellow fever epedimics, and several severe hurricanes as well as a devastating fire in 1903. Throughout those years, the school has emphasized the holistic education of Men of Character, forming them physically, spiritually, and academically to go forth into the world.
