The Total Transformation Challenge

The authors of the Total Transformation challenge you to try their “practical, real world solutions for the most challenging problems parents face, such as defiance, disrespect, lying and cursing, acting out in school, unmotivated behavior and more.” (1)

Created by renowned behavioral therapist Dr. James Lehman and his wife, Janet, “the Total Transformation is a comprehensive, multi-media program … on DVD and CD with a 116 page interactive workbook.” (2)

The program claims to teach “powerful techniques” for handling problem children.  It promises to teach parents “How to Eliminate ‘Acting Out’ in Public,” how to apply consequences, and to explain “which [consequences] work which ones work, and which ones don’t, including specific consequences for kids in all age groups.” (3) It also claims to teach you “how to stop arguing with your child … You’ll be stunned at how quickly it works – even if your teenage son is 6’2” tall and you’re just 5’4”.” (4)

But is this a product you should buy?  Reviews of the program are mixed.  Some people feel it plays like a PR segment. One parent wrote, “I watched the first disk, and although it kind of played like a long commercial for something I had already bought, there was some good information in there. It gave me hope that this just may help.” (5)

Others find the program dull, writing, “[W]hile I think it is probably a good system, I have to admit that it was hard for me to get through the audio CDs….they actually put me to sleep! I hope to get through the entire program someday.” (6)

But other people are thoroughly happy with the program.  One parent wrote, “I started using The Total Transformation … a couple of months ago. What I really like about this program (and there are so many things!) is that it gave me some practical things to do immediately to help stop my son’s obnoxious behavior … It’s helped me understand how my child thinks, how (and WHY) he has these outbursts and some different roles that he and I have both fallen into.” (7)
