Making use of a properly devised behavior modification plan is important for parents who have a child that suffers from a mental condition or exhibits varied forms of behavior. Antisocial behavior needs to be modified as soon as possible, and it is important for parents to create a proper plan of proceedings in order to make sure that the behavior of the child is rectified accordingly. There are a number of different plans and principles that need to be followed, and depending upon the reasons for which such behavior is being exhibited, it is important for people to create a plan accordingly.
Firstly, before any behavior modification plan can be created, it is absolutely important for the parents or concerned people to find out what causes such behavior. This approach is also known as the ‘ABC’ approach, as it aims to find out the antecedent behind such behavior, and then analyze the behavior itself, and ultimately, the consequences of the behavior are analyzed. These three factors are essential to the formation of any plan of behavior modification.
The plan must constitute the actions that will be taken, such as creating a consistent routine for the child, and then making sure that it is followed. It is usually wise to maintain a journal of sorts, and write down notes regarding any changes in behavior that might be noticed, which will help greatly in altering the plan in accordance with the changes in behavior. Generally, creating such a plan also requires the help of a psychologist or a psychiatrist, who can help in giving advice to the parents about how to alter the behavior of their child, and what methods, can be used. Positive and negative reinforcements, rewards and punishments are all parts of the plan too.
